1. Check the weather forecast before automatically watering your lawn. It could rain that day.
2. Never water with a sprinkler on a windy day, as the wind will carry away much of the water before it hits the ground.
3. Adjust sprinkler heads and water flow to avoid watering unnecessary objects such as walkways or rocks.
4. Water your yard/garden early in the morning or late at night when it is cooler to avoid excessive evaporation.
5. Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation in gardens. They provide deep, accurate watering that will encourage strong root growth.
